You Don't Need More Time to Paint. You Need to Make Space.
One of the most common things I hear from artists is:
"I just don't have time to paint."
And if you're balancing work, family, responsibilities, and everything else life throws your way, I completely understand why it feels that way.
Our calendars are full. There are always dishes to wash, emails to answer, errands to run, and people depending on us.
But over the years, I've noticed something.
For many of us, it isn't actually about having more time.
It's about making space.
Not just in our schedules.
But in our minds.
The Mental Space to Create
Have you ever finally found an hour to paint, only to realize your mind is still racing?
You're thinking about tomorrow's to-do list.
The laundry waiting downstairs.
The appointment you forgot to schedule.
The email you still need to answer.
Technically, you have the time.
But mentally, you're somewhere else.
Creativity needs more than an open calendar—it needs room to breathe.
That's why protecting your creative time often starts long before you ever pick up a paintbrush.
Stop Asking, "When Will I Have Time?"
Instead of asking:
"When do I have time to paint?"
Try asking:
"Where can I create a little space?"
That shift changes everything.
Because creating space doesn't always require an entire free afternoon.
Sometimes it looks like:
- Waking up 20 minutes before the rest of the house.
- Choosing to paint instead of scrolling through your phone before bed.
- Letting something else be good enough so you can protect a few quiet moments for yourself.
Those small decisions add up.
Give Yourself Permission to Paint Imperfectly
One of the biggest obstacles isn't lack of time.
It's the belief that everything has to be just right before we begin.
We think we need:
- The perfect setup.
- Plenty of uninterrupted hours.
- A burst of inspiration.
- The energy to create something amazing.
But none of those things are required.
You don't need a perfect afternoon.
You don't need a beautifully organized studio.
You don't even need to feel inspired.
You just need to begin.
The first brushstroke is often the hardest. After that, something starts to shift.
Painting Changes More Than Your Canvas
I've seen it in myself, and I've heard it from countless artists.
When you make time to paint—even for just a little while—something happens beyond the artwork itself.
Your shoulders relax.
Your breathing slows.
Your mind becomes quieter.
For a little while, you're fully present.
And in a world that constantly demands your attention, that kind of presence is incredibly valuable.
Painting isn't just about finishing another piece.
Sometimes it's about finding a moment of peace in the middle of everything else.
Creativity Is Worth Making Room For
So this week, don't wait for the perfect window of time to magically appear.
It probably won't.
Instead, create a small one.
Protect twenty minutes.
Leave the dishes for a little while.
Close the laptop.
Pick up the brush.
Your painting doesn't have to be finished today.
It doesn't even have to be good.
What matters is that you showed up.
Because every time you make space for your creativity, you're reminding yourself that this part of you matters too.
And that's always time well spent.
